Help Norwood Primary School win

NORWOOD - ON THE morning of 23 June, Norwood Primary School pupils, teachers and parents gathered in their school hall to knit squares and blankets for the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

The 67 Blankets drive has paired up with the Cell C school competition, which will give R21 000 to a selected school that makes 21 hand-knitted blankets and hands them to the organisation on 18 July. Entered schools stand a chance to win R42 000 if 42 blankets are handed over.

Schools are able to enter by either knitting together 21 blankets, or squares which will be sewn together afterwards to make up a blanket. These blankets will be donated to those in need.

Norwood Primary School will be on holiday from 26 June, and teachers at the school, as well as the 67 Blankets team, encouraged parents and pupils to knit during the holidays to be able to gain entry into the competition and increase their chances of winning. The wool and knitting equipment needed to start the blankets was sponsored by Wooden Textile.

Lynton Lefevre, ambassador of 67 Blankets, said anyone in the community is welcome to donate handmade, knitted squares or blankets to the school to better their chances in the competition and warm the hearts of those in need. “The sense of community in this school is phenomenal, it’s not only about knitting, this drive gives the children a sense of achievement,” he said.

Lefevre can be contacted if anyone in the community wishes to donate blankets or squares to Norwood Primary School for the drive.
