Pupils sleep under the stars

LINKSFIELD - King David Schools pupils will be sleeping outside in solidarity with the homeless on 18 June.

Grade 7 pupils are to join their teachers, principals and Rabbi Craig Kacev, director of the South African Jewish Board of Education, in the King David SleepOut. Their aim will be to collect blankets for distribution to the homeless through Boys’ and Girls’ Town.

Participants will sleep in the corridors of the school in Linksfield on cardboard boxes, with only some blankets as shelter against the elements. All pupils of the Victory Park, Linksfield and Sandton campuses have been encouraged to donate blankets to the participants, which will be given to Boys’ and Girls’ Town.

“We have embraced this opportunity to create awareness among our students [about] those who are not fortunate enough to sleep in a warm bed at night,” said Gaby Cohen, marketing and communications manager at King David Schools.

King David Schools try to nurture menchin, which roughly translates to being a good-hearted, caring and charitable individual.

“The idea of giving charity and having empathy for others are values that are instilled in King David pupils,” said Cohen.

The Jewish board organised the event to coincide with 702 and Sun International’s CEO SleepOut in Sandton.
