Future hockey bokkies

JOBURG - IN ITS 16th year, the St Mary's Investec Hockey Festival had more than 500 eager youngsters who were ready for the challenge of playing against other schools.

With 32 independent and government schools participating in this year’s event, the four day festival was to be the biggest yet.

Ros Howell, St Mary’s deputy headmistress and former national hockey player, coach and captain, elaborated on the festival’s success and format.

“This festival is a training ground for future provincial and national players,” she said. “We’ve been fortunate enough to field numerous Springboks in this tournament over the years including Celia Evans, Lilian du Plessis, Cindy Brown, Roxy Turner, Kelly Madsen, Louise Coetzer, Shelley Russell, Dirkie Chamberlin, Lisa-Marie Deetlefs and Lesle-Ann George. The festival has a unique fast-paced format with games played over a 25-minute, one-way only running time.”

In its fifth year of sponsorship, head of marketing for Investec in South Africa, Janet Larsen said the company was delighted to continue their association with the festival.

St Mary’s came fifth in the tournament with C & N Sekondere Meisieskool Oranje crowned as champions.
