Norwood Community Police Forum march for murder victim
ORANGE GROVE - The Norwood Community Police Forum and around 400 supporters took to the streets of Orange Grove on the morning of 21 March in a bid to urge Norwood police to prioritise their investigation into the murder case of resident Pinky.
In a previously published letter, the forum’s Deborah Cox explained the incident. “In the early hours of Sunday morning, 25 January, Pinky’s badly beaten, raped and near-naked body was found at the entrance to the block of flats where she lived. Pinky was 37 years old with her life before her. She was a mother, sister, daughter… breadwinner. She lived and worked in Orange Grove. She did not deserve this ghastly, tragic end to her young life.”
The forum and supporters signed a petition for Norwood police to prioritise their investigation of this case.
They marched with their petition down 6th Avenue in Orange Grove to the site where Pinky’s body was found. The forum and supporters then continued their march to Norwood Police Station where the forum’s Duncan Barker handed over the petition to the Norwood police.
Reflecting on the march, Barker said, “We had a large turnout. I thank all of the community that came out and gave their support for Pinky [as well as] IRS Forensic Investigations and the steering committee who was involved.”
Chad Thomas of IRS Forensic Investigations, who provided the official escort of the March, said, “Considering the community’s apathy towards crime in the area, it was good to see such a [big] turnout.” He also hoped it would encourage communities to combat crime in future.
