Cable thief apprehended in Fairmount

FAIRMOUNT - A MALE was arrested on the corner of Elray and Green streets in Fairmount on 23 February for theft and trespassing.

According to Ward councillor Steven Kruger of Ward 72, residents heard their dog barking and upon investigation saw that the doors of a building housing the electricity supply (load centre) on Green Close were open.

The residents were able to alert a security guard who saw a male exiting.

The security guard gave chase and was able to apprehend the male. The suspect was handed over to the Sandringham police.

Kruger said, “Theft of copper from load centres is a big problem in the area and is one of the biggest causes of power outages, excluding load shedding. I met with managers at Cap [Community Active Patrol] about two to three weeks ago to discuss how they can assist in securing the load centers, and have e-mailed a request to City Power officials to meet with Cap and me to discuss possible co-operation between City Power and Cap. Unfortunately, so far nobody from City Power has responded to the e-mail, but I will be following up.”
