Cable thief falls to his death

NORWOOD - A MAN believed to be a cable thief fell to his death on Ivy Road in Norwood on 17 February.

According to councillor Marcelle Ravid of Ward 73, the man was attempting to steal cables from the top of a pole when he fell and hit his head on the pavement below, dying instantly.

Sergeant Nurse Sanyane of Norwood police confirmed the incident. Sanyane said, “We have been unable to identify the man as he sustained so much damage to his face.” She added that the man also sustained burns to his face from the electric cables.

Sanyane said this had not been the first time a cable thief had been fatally injured while attempting to steal municipal property. “The public needs to be very careful if they attempt to steal objects that are potentially dangerous. People who are injured while attempting to steal municipal property will get no sympathy from police.”
