Motorist arrested for killing baby girl

SANDRINGHAM - Sandringham police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela confirmed that the motorist who killed a baby girl on Kent Avenue in Sandringham on 14 February was arrested and facing charges of culpable homicide.

Maphakela explained the male driver had reversed into a driveway on Kent Avenue when he hit the child. He said the driver claimed he did not see the child.

A security guard, who was stationed at the corner of Kent and 13th avenues at the time of the incident, said he heard a car stop and beep, and then he heard a woman scream. He said the gate of the house, where the car was stopped on the driveway, opened. He said Netcare911 Paramedics were called to the scene.

Media liaison officer for Netcare911 Paramedics Santi Steinmann said Netcare911 received the call at 8.30am on 14 February and responded to the scene immediately. She said paramedics declared the child, who was one-and-a-half years old, dead on the scene.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed that the incident was under investigation and said the department sent their deepest condolences to the family who lost their child.
