Taking on Joburg crime

JOBURG - COMMUNITY Active Protection (Cap) reports another crime-free week in Glenhazel, and takes a lesson from a robbery in Norwood.

A briefing released by the non-profit security company celebrated a second month free of contact crime in the Glenhazel area after no reports of contact crime emerged between 2 and 8 February. Cap also reported the arrest of seven suspects around Johannesburg in the same week.

A firearm and two knives were recovered from a suspect arrested in Melrose, while the arrest of two suspects in Highlands North led to the recovery of a shotgun, ammunition and a stolen vehicle. Four other suspects were arrested in Rembrandt Park, Orange Grove and Glenhazel.

However, following an armed robbery in Norwood during the same period, Cap has warned community members to exercise caution and avoid becoming easy targets. A group of three or four armed men made contact with their victim in a parking lot on the corner of Grant Avenue and William Road at about 1.40pm on 4 February. The robbers stole valuables including a Rolex watch, before fleeing the scene in a grey Audi Q5 Quattro.

In the aftermath of the incident, Cap warned residents against wearing flashy jewellery in public, warning that ‘spotters’ placed in public places such as shopping centres will single out a target wearing visible, valuable jewellery.

“The criminals then follow their target from the centre to their vehicle, and all the way home, until the opportune moment arises to strike. The point of contact is usually in the driveway of the victim’s home. The criminals then know exactly what to go for,” warned Cap.

The security company recommended wearing more discreet jewellery, and to avoid ‘flashing’ it in public. It is advisable to be on the lookout for two or more males travelling together on foot or in a vehicle, and to be aware of anyone watching or following you when pulling into your driveway. Avoid lingering in your driveway, and call Cap if you feel uncomfortable at any time.

In the week of 2 to 8 February, the number of calls made by the Glenhazel community increased from 17 to 144 calls, while calls made by the Norwood community decreased from 5 to 37 calls. Cap encourages residents in its 20 000 households across Johannesburg to get in touch with security concerns and keep the calls coming in.
