Elderly rock ‘n roll in Sandringham Gardens

SANDRINGHAM - SANDRINGHAM Gardens hosted their annual dance party for their elderly residents. And fittingly, most music was from the '50s, '60 '70s and '80s, getting the residents on their feet and dancing.

Cynthia Ambrose from the home’s lifestyle centre said, “We are having the time of our lives, dancing, rocking and rolling at home for the aged.”

She said Sandringham Gardens was established in 1912 and incorporated into the Chevrah Group in 2000.

“This facility has been taking care of the needs of older persons for close to 100 years. It is home to over 500 elderly people, approximately 300 of whom are in need of long-term, intensive medical and nursing care,” said Ambrose.

Entertainment was provided by the band The Time Bandits made up of Allyson Greenberg, Jules Gordon, Manfred Stein and The Sonic Entertainment by Jeremy Vandeur.-

Greenberg said, “We are doing this for our parents who brought us into this world, we will always love them, and what better way to show our love than with the joy music brings to them.”

And the joy was written all over their faces as they danced through the night while enjoying delicious food and good wine.

Speaking on behalf of the residents, Harry Israel said they appreciated all the hard work by Sandringham Gardens general manager, Esme van der Walt and her staff members.

Israel said, “Esme and her staff worked tirelessly to create this lovely, decorated dining room, creating the ambience for this great affair.

“We residents have been given this beautiful ball so that we can enjoy ourselves. It is dedicated to all of us for our pleasure and entertainment. So, in this view, we owe it to ourselves to [enjoy] a night imbued with good thoughts and comradeship.”

Meanwhile, Van der Walt thanked all the residents and staff for playing their part in making the night an unforgettable one.

“Today is your day, thank you residents and the staff for being part of us and for your assistance,” she said.

The Sandringham Gardens hospital, which forms part of the Chevrah’s Community Medical Centre, has a full complement of nursing staff, general practitioners and access to consulting specialists.

For those in the residential section who are well enough to enjoy it there is a wide range of amenities on offer, regular entertainment, outings, in-house functions, religious lectures and a beautifully-maintained shul are on all hand.
