Region E Sport Council formed

Alex school teacher and top sports administrator, Percy Ndaba has been elected president of the newly formed Executive Committee of the Region E Sport Council.

The City of Johannesburg Region E Sport and Recreation Directorate set out to establish the Region E local sport council after recognising that partnerships were an excellent mechanism for delivering sport and recreation to its citizens.

The main objective of the sport council will be to promote and initiate sport and recreation programmes in the region, increase community participation and facility usage of the programmes, create and implement long term sports development plans, establish sustainable structures to assist all those involved in local sports development programmes to face the associated challenges and ensure that quality sporting programmes were organised at grassroots level.

The core functions of the sport council , which will meet for its first General Meeting at the Altrek Sport Grounds on 29 November from 9am, will be to communicate, educate and

implement the programmes of action.

Region E Sport and Recreation teamed up with the Johannesburg Sport Council and the Alexandra Sport Council to convene the Region E Sport Indaba on 16 August at Paterson Park Recreation Centre in Orange Grove, which aimed at streamlining, re-positioning and improving sport and recreation delivery in Region E.

The indaba was attended by representatives of different community organisations and sporting codes such as soccer, rugby, cricket, tennis, martial arts and netball to mention just a few. After numerous presentations from Johannesburg Sport Council, City of Johannesburg Sport and Recreation Directorate, Gauteng Department of Sports and Recreation and Gauteng Sport Council, it was decided ideal to establish the local Region E sport council.

Those elected were Glenton Khoza (1st vice-president), Zodwa Shezi (2nd vice-president), Themba Ndlovu (general secretary), Dr Carel-Piet Van Eeden (treasurer), and committee members members Jack Madiseng (from the Alexandra Cricket Club), Aaron Raletjena, Phumza Masina, Hope Mathopa, Robert Langa (from Alex football) and Gregory Baloyi (an official of Alexandra United Football Club and brother of former Mamelodi Sundowns goal minder, Brian ‘Spiderman’ Baloyi).
