Bank robbers sent to prison

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Magistrates' Court sentenced two convicted bank robbers to 17 and 15 years in prison respectively.

According to police, the men robbed an Absa Bank in Yeoville on 1 June last year on Raleigh Street.

Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said, “The suspects ordered the clients and the bank staff to lie down while they took money and they left the premises,” Malatji said a docket of business robbery was registered and investigated by the Yeoville police detective branch.

He said an intensive investigation was launched which led to the arrests of the suspects. Malatji said the suspects were identified as Thulani Mkhize and Khumbulani Shezi.

Malatji added, “They were found guilty in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to 17 years and 15 years respectively. Both men were declared unfit to possess a firearm in the near future.”
