A birthday bash at Thembalami

LOMBARDY EAST - RESIDENTS of Thembalami Care Centre celebrated their October birthdays in style thanks to the Inyoni Angels.

Every month, residents at the care centre, which provides a place of hope for elderly people of uncertain future, gather for an afternoon of entertainment and festivities in honour of those who have birthdays that month. A live performance puts a sparkle in everyone’s eye, while birthday presents, cakes and treats create a party atmosphere.

October’s celebrations were no different, as a large group of residents gathered to celebrate the birthdays of 12 men and two women from the youthful Brian Cross (67) to Joseph Stewart, who attained a very respectable 95 years, and Isabelle van der Merwe, who chose to keep her age secret. Elvis Presley impersonator Ken Thomas had women blushing at his charms, while residents and nurses danced between the tables to the King of Rock ‘n Roll’s greatest hits.

Thembalami’s monthly birthday bashes are hosted by the generous and enormously effective Inyoni Angels, a group of residents from fellow Rand Aid Association retirement village, Inyoni Creek. Led by the capable Val Bartram, the Angels not only collect donations of food and gifts for Thembalami birthdays, but have raised about R250 000 for the centre.

Thanks to their tireless work, Thembalami boasts a new Alzheimer’s care centre, a TV room and extensive refurbishments, from lifts and bathrooms to curtains and tiles.

The Inyoni Angels are now in the process of collecting gifts for the Christmas hampers that will be handed out in the festive season. Contributions are welcomed.
