An insight into the life and times of Leonard Cohen

HOUGHTON - DUE to huge public demand, the Rabbi Cyril Harris Community Centre will re-screen an acclaimed and moving documentary revealing the life and times of legendary musician Leonard Cohen.

NOTE: Please include this as an event. Thanks.

Since bursting onto the world’s musical stage in 1967, Cohen has inspired generations with his unique personality and haunting music, becoming one of the most original and enduring artists to emerge from the ’60s. He is widely regarded as one of the finest and most influential poets and songwriters of his generation, a writer whose artful mélange of love, and despair has earned him a passionate international following, and the respect and admiration of artists ranging from R.E.M. to Johnny Cash.

Now the centre invites Cohen fans and newcomers alike to catch a glimpse into the life of this extraordinary character with Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man, a touching and award-winning documentary by Lian Lunson, for whom it scooped the Dorothy Arzner Directors Award at the Women in Film Crystal Awards in 2006.

Hailed by Oscar-nominated German filmmaker, playwright and author Wim Wenders as “one of the greatest music films of all time”, Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man features highlights from a 2005 all-star tribute concert staged in Cohen’s honour by music producer Hal Wilner in Australia. Major artists including Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, Rufus Wainwright, Beth Orton, Kate and Anna Mcgarrigle offered their interpretations of Cohen’s songs, while interviews with the tribute musicians reveal their thoughts on Cohen and his work.

An extensive interview with Cohen in the documentary reveals his trademark wry humour and soulful intensity. Using his own artwork, poetry and personal collection of photographs to reflect upon his colourful past and his creative process, the legend speaks in detail about his life and his art. The film also includes a special performance of Tower of Song, in which Cohen is accompanied by U2.

Described by Hollywood Reporter as “an affectionate and intimate celebration of the acclaimed troubadour in stirring music and words”, this is one musical documentary not to be missed.
