Window washers an aggresive menace

REMBRANDT PARK - A familiar and sometimes unwelcome sight to motorists around Johannesburg, window washers have set up business on Modderfontein Road to the alarm of some motorists.

One concerned commuter is appealing to police to remove the informal entrepreneurs from the area around Greenstone Shopping Centre and the intersection of Modderfontein and Wordsworth roads, where she said they annoy and sometimes intimidate motorists.

“I panic when I see them, as the last time they smacked my car because they started washing my window when I said no,” said the motorist who did not want to be named.

The woman added a request to other motorists not to give money to the window washers.

“This just makes them come back,” she said.

Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, agreed.

“The biggest problem is we’re finding members of the public giving them money,” he commented.

Minnaar said he was not aware that window washers had started to operate in the Greenstone and Rembrandt Ridge areas. The most problematic hotspots in Johannesburg, he said, were the streets around Bruma Lake, the Grayston Bridge, and William Nicol Drive.

“JMPD do follow-up operations at most of these intersections,” Minnaar said, adding that once the presence of window washers on Modderfontein Road had been brought to the attention of bylaw enforcement, Metro police would include the area in their regular operations.

According to Minnaar, motorists who experience similar problems can also lodge a complaint at their local police stations.
