Creche robber arrested

YEOVILLE - Yeoville police arrested a man who entered a crèche in the precinct and robbed a staff member of her money and other valuables.

According to police the incident took place in Hunter Street. Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said the suspect went into a crèche pretending to be a parent looking for a place for his child. Malatji said, “The suspect asked to view the information and the place. He then threatened the employee with a knife and demanded money and cellphones. He forced the employee to hand over all valuables to him and he left the premises.”

The employee screamed for help. Members of the community heard her screams and came to her rescue. Malatji said the members of the community managed to apprehend the suspect and called the police.

He said, “The suspect was detained at Yeoville Police Station and was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon. Malatji thanked the members of the community for the sterling work they had done in apprehending the suspect and ensuring that those who broke the law were brought to book.
