CPF issues stern warning about imposters

NORWOOD - Chairperson of the Norwood Community Policing Form, Duncan Barker has issued warnings to residents of the area and surrounding suburbs.

Barker said there had been reports of persons impersonating officials from City Power and other municipal organisations trying to gain access to people’s properties. He said residents needed to be aware as this was a modus operandi of criminals to either steal or rob people of their valuables after gaining entry into their properties.

Barker said, “Please ask for identification and even call the police or your security provider to come around. If they are legit they should happily wait for them to arrive. If not then please let us all know and even try and take pictures of them so we can distribute.”

He added that residents should lookout for a blue Toyota Conquest used in thefts out of motor vehicles.

Barker said residents living in the Sector 1 area should be on the lookout for such any suspicious activities as the area had attracted attention from criminals. “If you are from around this area, take care, especially on the Club Street and Bedford Road corner,” said Barker.

He added, “It also seems as though Sector 1 has picked up in terms of criminal activity. It is a good thing then that we have a meeting scheduled for this sector on 28 August to establish a sub forum.”

The meeting will take place at the Wanderers Club’s Champion Room in Melrose and will start at 6pm.

Suburbs covered in the sector include Houghton Estate, Melrose, Melrose North, Melrose Estate, Melrose Bird Sanctuary, James and Ethel Grey Park, Houghton Golf Club, Killarney Golf Course, Birdhaven, Riviera and Birnam.

Barker encouraged residents to like the forum’s pages on Facebook and Twitter to receive updates and tips from the forum.

He said, “Please consider getting involved in one of our forums. We need all of us to fight the scourge of crime.”
