Parolee nabbed by police

BRAMLEY – Police arrested a suspect in connection with a house robbery in Bramley.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said police were called to Silwood Road in connection with a house robbery. He said upon arrival they found one suspect lying on the ground with a firearm next to him.

Maphakela said that a group of suspects had opened fire on security guards who were responding to the incident, who then fired back. “One suspect was shot and paramedics declared him dead on the scene. An unlicensed firearm, ammunition and two cellphones were recovered,” said Maphakela.

“The security guard sustained three gunshot wounds and was taken to Millpark Hospital, his colleague was also taken to hospital to be treated for trauma.”

Maphakela said police arrested a second suspect who had fled just a few kilometres from the house, and that he was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspect allegedly provided false names but after interrogation police managed to get his correct information.

It was discovered that the suspect in question had a pending case for possession of an unlicensed firearm and of stolen goods. He had also previously been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Maphakela said the 24-year-old suspect, was out on parole when he was arrested. He had appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody. He was expected to appear again for a bail application soon.
