Three die in police shoot-out

BRAAMFONTEIN - Three suspects died a following a car chase and shoot-out with police which ended in Braamfontein on 12 January.

Police spokesperson Constable Mduduzi Zondo said the incident began in Westdene, where an unconfirmed number of suspects allegedly robbed a business at around 8pm. Zondo said, “Three suspects remained in a silver Toyota Quantum, which was supposed to be the getaway vehicle.”

Zondo said police noticed the suspicious vehicle and when they approached it, one suspect got out of the vehicle and shot at the police. Officers fired back and the suspect then ran back into the Quantum.

The suspects fled the scene and police followed suite. “A chase ensued to Braamfontein where the Quantum bumped into another vehicle before coming to a standstill,” he said.

According to Zondo police surrounded the vehicle and two suspects tried to flee the scene while firing shots at police. Zondo said, “Police fired back and one suspect was shot dead on the scene; the other two died upon arrival in hospital.”

“One firearm was recovered and its serial number had been filed off,” he said.

Zondo said an undisclosed amount of money was taken from the shop during the robbery.
