Police find dagga during school raid

JOBURG - A surprise drug search at a school in Highlands yielded positive results as police seized dagga and some unwanted substances at the school.

Norwood police, in a joint operation with the Johannesburg k9 unit, Metro police and the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, conducted a drug search at Highlands North Boys’ High School.

Police seized dagga and cigarettes, and no weapons were found. According to police their mission was to eliminate the use of drugs at schools and curb violence after a spate of violent incidents happening at schools around the country.

Norwood police spokesperson Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said they wanted do more searches at various schools as a crime-free community started with children at school. “We are happy with the outcome and we will continue fighting for a drug-free South Africa,” she said.

Alcoholism and drug dependence council volunteer, Brian Dladla, also advised pupils on dealing with and overcoming drug addiction. Dladla urged all young people to resist the urge to get involved in drug use, “It destroys lives; the youth should aspire to a better and drug-free future,” he added.

Police also encouraged pupils to seek help at the drug and alcohol council should they find themselves with an addiction problem.
