New 2019 emojis champion inclusivity

JOBURG –290 inclusive emojis approved for official use across devices in March.

The Unicode Consortium has approved 290 new emojis that are set to become standard in 2019. The consortium is responsible for approval of emojis which make it onto all devices and platforms.

This year, many emojis are bound together under the inclusivity umbrella. Not only will the emojis allow users to choose the race and gender of both people when using a couple’s emoji but have also introduced emojis for deaf people, blind people, people in wheelchairs, and those with prosthetic limbs.

The emojis will only be usable online following a 5 March update, but each tech company will decide when to introduce their own versions of the new emojis.
