Wits Art Museum kicks off First Thursdays

JOBURG – WAM kicks off weekly First Thursdays events with music and art.

Home to an extraordinary collection of African art, including contemporary and historical art from South Africa and art from West and Central Africa, the Wits Art Museum (WAM) is one of Joburg’s foremost tourist attractions. WAM is set to kick off weekly First Thursdays events with music and art.

The museum’s current exhibition is The Art of Lithography: A Collaborative Expression of LL Editions, an exhibition which pays homage to master printer Leshoka Joe Legate as it celebrates a significant milestone for the Johannesburg-based fine art lithographic printmaking studio, which was founded in 2013.

Artist and DJ Robert Machiri and curator Boitumelo Tlhoaele will be experimenting with communicating the focussed, labour-intensive processes of lithographic printmaking in an innovative and experimental music performance, which is inspired by the exhibition.

The exhibition, curated by Boitumelo Tlhoaele and Tšhegofatso Mabaso, explores the nature of the collaboration which is deeply rooted in printmaking studio practices. It highlights the processes, expressions, experiences, potentials and tensions between the printmaker and artists. The exhibition showcases work by 24 young and established artists who have worked with Legate since LL Editions opened.

The event is free and all are welcome.
