For many women, hair is considered a crowning glory – a prized jewel which does not only make them feel good about themselves but is a form of agency that helps them make political statements.
Following the success of the Marvel film, Black Panther, in which female characters are adorned with gorgeous natural hairstyles, hair politics have once again come to the fore.
Black hair in its natural state of beautiful uprightness has returned as a mark of political consciousness and feminist visualisation. It is important to note that celebrating natural black hair is in no way a rejection of women who choose to straighten their hair and don weaves – womanhood and individual choice as it exists on a spectrum should rightfully be celebrated.
