What to do this weekend

JOBURG – Top five things to do in Joburg this weekend.

We have officially reached the end of November and the beginning of December’s big days. We safely say ‘Ke Dezemba’ and have uninhibited fun without being judged throughout the month, but for now, let’s cool down to some cocktails and beer during the first weekend as we relax, recoup, live our best lives at these blazing events!

Check out our top five things to do this weekend:

30 November: Pina

The 10th Drama for Life Conference and Festival presents Pina, an interdisciplinary new work by Drama for Life Artist in residence Kwanele Finch Thusi. The play is created as a tribute and a critique of the late Pina Bausch. Finch seeks to reveal how Bausch objectified the black body. His work is a reclamation of the black body. The title Pina, Sesotho for ‘song’, relates to Thusi’s underlying song and relationship with his body and the body of land he calls home.

1 December: Pyjama Party

The Pyjama Party is now in its sixth year and has found a new home for its return on 1 December. Hosted at 39 Gwigwi Mrwebi Street in Newtown, the anticipated event has an amazing line-up with music to complement the nighties, onesies and even two-piece Disney character pyjamas – with a whole lot of surprises in store. Tickets available on www.webtickets.co.za at R200.

1 December: AFROPUNK Joburg Battle of the Bands

Following an online voting process, eight artists have made it to the final battles on 30 November and 1 December at Carfax in Newtown. At the Battle of the Bands final, a panel of expert judges will select one winner based on a range of winning skills including stage-craft, energy, promotional efforts, originality, technical ability and visual image. Tickets available at the door for R20.

2 December: Fashion Sundays @ Maboneng

A cool, calm and fashionable Sunday in a beautiful backyard garden in Maboneng. Amazing models will be showcasing beautiful designs from the city’s young designers while food, drinks and more fashion stalls will be all over the place. Amazing DJs are also billed on the line-up and will provide back-to-back music. Tickets available on www.quicket.co.za at R50.

2 December: Struggle T-shirts: Public Testimony and Political Protest

Hosted at Kalashnikovv Gallery, Struggle T-shirts: Public Testimony and Political Protest is an exhibition which looks at the embodiments of resistance as expressed in The South African History Archive (SAHA) rich struggle T-shirts archive of anti-apartheid movements.
