The month of October marks Transport Month in South Africa, a month that is intended to stress the importance of the provision of safe, reliable and affordable public transport. However, the month also welcomed record-high fuel prices as motorists are expected to cough up R17,08 per litre of petrol – giving motorists and public transport users unbearable financial annoyances.

EWN reported that the knock-on effect will add to the pain with bus and taxi fares possibly going up too along with food prices.

It seems like the safest and fool-proof way to relieve the effects of the fuel hike is to relinquish owning a vehicle or even having anywhere to go, however, we have to face the harsh realities head-on and make some adjustments in our driving and commuting habits.

Here are some alternative and cheaper means of transport amidst the record-high fuel hike:

  1. Get a lift

A foolproof way to get to where you’re going for almost at no cost, asking for a lift from a close friend or family doesn’t cost a dime and you’ll get to wherever you’re going – provided you don’t take advantage.

A tried and tested mode of transportation, you and a group of people can travel together in a car and get to your destination hassle-free.
