JOBURG – Black Panther hype continues to grow as the movie is set to be released today.

Black Panther, the most anticipated movie of the year, continued to gain hype amid its South African release on Friday, 16 February.

The film as well as its accompanying soundtrack, which features local acts such as Sjava, Saudi and Babes Wodumoe, has been critically acclaimed by film critics, movie-goers and the general public as it places Africa within a positive narrative.

The film is set in fictional Wakanda, the most technologically advanced nation in the Marvel universe. It follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the king of Wakanda (played by veteran South African actor, Dr John Kani), returns to Wakanda to defend the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s courage as king – and Black Panther – is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.  The film also features appearances by local actors Atandwa Kani and Connie Chiume.

Black Panther stars, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira, were also in South Africa for screenings of the movie:
