Shortstraw releases new collaborative body of work with Those Meddling Kids
JOBURG — "For the past 12 months, every single Friday, we released a brand-new song as well as a music videos and artwork for the song."
The popular South African Indie rock band, Shortstraw, will be launching their new album on 1 September at The Good Luck Bar in Johannesburg.
The album, titled, Those Meddling Kids has been a collaborative project that’s been 12 months in the making.
“We just felt that making an album the traditional way was outdated, so we came up with the concept of Those Meddling Kids. Basically, we had all kinds of creatives contribute to the project. So for the past 12 months, every single Friday, we released a brand-new song as well as a music video and artwork for the song. The music videos and artworks were done by creatives who wanted to join Those Meddling Kids,” explained band member, Alastair Thomas.
As for the actual creative process, Thomas said although it was sometimes challenging, it was an experience, nonetheless.
“Deciding to release music every month kept the process exciting for everyone involved. On some occasions, we would feel the pressure of meeting the deadline for both the song and the music video, but on other occasions, we were able to create freely because we had a bit of time to spare.”
Now, 12 songs later, a year of releasing a new song and music video every Friday, Shortstraw is finally launching the 12 songs as an entire body of work for all their fans.

Laudo Liebenberg appears on the latest and final single taken from the album on a song called, Eventually as the one and only featured artist on the album.
“We just want the fans to enjoy the music and the quality of it all. We had a great time putting it all together for 12 months and now it’s time for them to hopefully enjoy what we created.”
The official launch will be taking place on 1 September at The Good Luck Bar in Johannesburg and the band is looking forward to an evening with the fans.
“All the work from the past 12 months is finally over. Now we get to enjoy it all with our loyal fans,” concluded Thomas.
