JOBURG — "We chose Troyeville Primary School specifically because we wanted to brighten the lives of children in one of Johannesburg's disadvantaged areas."

Mpact Recycling recently partnered up with Chicken Xpress for a special initiative at Troyeville Primary School.

The schoolchildren were ecstatic when the famous Mpact mascot, Ronnie Recycler made a surprise visit to the school to give a talk about the importance of recycling and how the collection of recyclables can help their school raise funds.

With the help of the food outlet, Mpact was able to treat children, teachers and volunteers to 1 000 sponsored meals.

“We chose Troyeville Primary School specifically because we wanted to brighten the lives of children in one of Johannesburg’s disadvantaged areas,” said Mpact Recycling communications manager, Donna Noble.

“Visiting school’s such as Troyeville forms part of our Schools’ Recycling Programme. Troyeville Primary has been recycling with us since 2013 and is part of a Corporate Social Investment initiative that teaches children the importance of protecting their planet and highlights the role they can play, individually or as a team, by understanding recycling and waste separation.”

The school has also enlisted the services of parents who are struggling to pay the required school fees to assist with the various school projects run. It has also made arrangements for social workers to help schoolchildren with issues such as abuse.

According to Noble, the initiative was developed by keeping children’s natures in mind and the programme was built on the principle ‘Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may not remember, involve me and I’ll understand’.

Noble said the school is actively involved in recycling with the youngsters bringing paper, cardboard boxes, milk and juice cartons from home to support its paper bank initiative.

Delon Biton, marketing manager for Chicken Xpress said the company’s goal is to become the ‘people’s champion’ in each new community. “Initiatives such as these are our way of making a difference in the communities we operate in and showing them how much we care,” said Bilton.

Noble said Mpact is serious about its initiatives. “Children and schools are high on our CSI agenda. They are, after all, the future of South Africa and need to be equipped with the knowledge and tools to become active participants in our economy.”
