Man arrested in Johannesburg for illegal firearm possession

JOBURG – A man in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition is arrested by Joburg police during a crime prevention patrol.

The Johannesburg Central Cluster Crime Combating Unit arrested a 33-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on the corner of Lilian Ngoyi and Nugget streets on 13 July.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg Central Cluster police, Captain Xoli Mbele said police were on a visible policing patrol in the area when they noticed the gun-toting suspect.

“Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties of stop and search when they saw a suspicious male. They stopped and searched him and recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Mbele.

“The suspect was detained at Johannesburg Central Police Station and will appear in Johannesburg Regional Court on charges of illegal gun possession.”
