St John’s College held its very own School SleepOut.
One hundred and twenty boys along with some of the teachers took to the outdoors to spend a night in the freezing cold as part of the school’s initiative.
This experience sought to raise awareness about what it is like for the homeless or those from vulnerable communities to be exposed to such harsh conditions on a daily basis. The boys were required to make temporary shelters with limited resources. They made beds out of cardboard and also made fires to help keep them warm throughout the cold winter night. The St John’s schoolchildren collected items such as nappies, baby formula and sheets for their chosen beneficiary, Angel’s Baby Sanctuary.
The school sleepout initiatives are all part of the Special Chapter, the SheEO SleepOut. This will see women in business spend a night outdoors at the Union Buildings to raise funds for the primary beneficiary, Door of Hope, an organisation that seeks to help abandoned children by giving them shelter and basic care, and also raise awareness and empathy for the homeless and those in vulnerable communities.
As part of the national Call to Action to support the influencers and leaders of South Africa, the 2017 School SleepOut will take place across the country.
The School SleepOut calls on schoolchildren, parents and teachers to spend a night outdoors.
