Metro police and South African Police nab lawbreakers in joint policing effort in Joburg

JOBURG – Metro Police and members of the South African Police conducted a joint policing operation in Sophiatown on 9 May which yielded some positive results as perpetrators were brought to book.

A joint policing effort between the Metro police and the South African Police was conducted in Sophiatown on 9 May.

According to the spokesperson for the Joburg Central Cluster police, captain Xoli Mbele, a number of positive results were yielded. “The operation was held from 5pm until 8pm,” he said.

“Various stop and searches were conducted and several alleged drug outlets were visited around the area.”

Mbele added that police were, however, successful in making several arrests. “Two wanted suspects were apprehended for a case of house breaking and theft that occurred in Springs (on the East Rand) in March 2012 and another one of theft out of a motor vehicle which took place in Sophiatown in October last year.

“A 33-year-old suspect was also apprehended for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”

Metro police spokesperson, chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar, added that the joint effort was instrumental in eradicating the scourge of crime. “Officers have a responsibility to uphold law and order. The joint crime combating operations increase police visibility and act as a deterrent against crime,” he said.

Police investigations into all the cases are underway and the suspects will make an appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
