We The People Walk 2017 to be held in Johannesburg at Con Hill

JOBURG – A walk to remember, a walk for your heritage.

The We The People Walk 2017 will once again take place in Johannesburg. Will you participate?

This is a symbolic walk that takes place annually at Constitution Hill, also known as Con Hill, inviting citizens to affirm constitutionalism and to recognise the role of those who participated in the struggle for the attainment of South Africa’s constitutional democracy.

Launched in 2014, the 8km walk is hosted by and starts at Constitution Hill and is set to take place on 26 March.

This historically significant venue has seen a number of politically and culturally motivated changes since its founding.

Having served as a jail, a station for the troopers during the second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902) and now a heritage site and Constitutional Court, Con Hill has seen both just and unjust acts take place inside its walls – providing the perfect starting point for this socio-politically-fuelled walk.

“This walk is a reminder to all citizens of the journey we travelled, to realise our freedom and democracy,” said Dawn Robertson, CEO of Constitution Hill. Significantly so, it is being hosted at Constitution Hill, once a place of injustice and brutality but now, home of the Constitutional Court, a protector of our human rights.

“We encourage everyone from all walks of life to wear their walking shoes and join us as we affirm constitutionalism.”

The day is not only for the benefit of those who lived through hardships but also to bridge the knowledge gap for the children who only have textbooks and teachings to find out about South Africa’s rich and transformative history.

We The Children Walk is designed to inculcate the Bill of Rights and responsibilities through activities such as interacting with mascots, musical activities, and other child-friendly activities.

After the walk, the public will be invited to enjoy musical performances and an array of activities to celebrate South Africa’s heritage.

Don’t miss out on this exciting walk to celebrate 21 years of the South African Constitution.
