The headmaster at Saheti School, Warwick Taylor, has a belief that sport brings people from different walks of life together, as seen by the fanfare that was on display at Saheti School on 4 March.
“Sport has a way of bringing a balance to our busy lives, and there is nothing better than engaging in healthy play and games,” he said.
“Understandably, these terms take on a slightly different meaning with the competitive spirit – and rightfully so.”
In light of the school’s commitment towards using sport as an agent for promoting social cohesion, Taylor said the Saheti Rugby Sevens and Netball Festival was all about healthy competition centred on good sportsmanship, teamwork, and camaraderie.
This was evident when Saheti ousted Holy Rosary 4–2 in the U16 netball championships semi-finals, but could not quite manage the same against the might of a relentless Heron Bridge outfit, which put six goals past them to win the U16 championship final 6–2.

The disappointment was replicated by the open girls after they, too, succumbed to the destruction of Heron Bridge by going down 8–2 in the semi-finals, eventually earning a fourth place finish.
The attention then turned to the rugby field, where a buoyant Saheti team, contesting the open plate final, ran onto the field through a tunnel formed by throngs of jovial supporters.
Saheti had scraped into the final with a 12–5 victory over Glenvista in the semi-final, but their hopes were dashed by Reddam House who beat the hosts 7–0 to be crowned champions of division 2 (plate).
“I think the only losers or people that found it tough, are the ones that have not given of their best,” said Taylor, following the school’s disappointing showing.
“So at the end of the day, there have been many successful teams here today, who’ve worked [extremely] hard.”
Extending congratulations to the triumphant participating teams, the headmaster said, “The teams that have come out on top are obviously thrilled – and so congratulations to them [for] a job well done.
“It’s been an amazing day [as] we could’ve easily had the worst weather. We’re thrilled with the way the day turned out in terms of numbers, and with the long tradition, the tournament already has. We hope for it to grow even further.”
