Jozi@Work protesters trash CBD

JOBURG – Jozi@Work staff wreak havoc in CBD during midnight protest

Metro police officers used rubber bullets to disperse an unruly group of Jozi@Work protesters as they wreaked havoc in Hillbrow and parts of the Joburg CBD.

According to Metro police spokesperson, chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar, a number of streets, including Bok, Twist, Plein and Klein streets were trashed by protesters at about midnight on 1 March.

Minnaar urged motorists to drive with caution during clean-up operations in the morning, given the extent of the rubble strewn across some roads in particular.

MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Nico de Jager has condemned the action taken by the Jozi@Work employees but has indicated that he had procured confirmation from a colleague that the matter was being assessed, and how Pikitup staff will be affected.

“I have engaged MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun about this matter and have been informed that the Johannesburg Metro Police, together with Pikitup, will strategise on how to best work together to ensure the safety of Pikitup workers,” Sun said.
