Suspect nabbed for possession of illegal firearm

JOBURG – Joburg Central police stopped a man in the CBD and frisked him after getting a tip-off that he was carrying an illegal firearm.

A 35-year-old man was arrested at about 2pm on 6 February at the corner of Plein and Eloff streets for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“Police received a tip-off from a member of the community about a suspect carrying a firearm and followed on that information,” said Captain Xoli Mbele, spokesperson for Joburg Central Police.

“They stopped and searched the male suspect. Police recovered a firearm containing live rounds but with no serial number. He failed to produce a licence.”

Police investigations are continuing and the suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
