They’re naked, they read, they’re back

JOBURG – They're naked and they're back.

After great success in 2016, Naked Girls Reading is back at POPArt Theatre in Maboneng, the home of all things trendy in Johannesburg.

With its adventurous residents and innovative, Eurocentric ideas, theatres and organisations, it was the perfect place to introduce Naked Girls Reading.

Last year Maboneng Precinct introduced Naked Girls Reading as one of the many interesting shows to be part of at POPArt Theatre, and it was met with such success that there was no other choice for the theatre organisers than to bring it back for a second year.

This year the line-up consists of some new faces.

Joining veteran nude reader, Ms Lola Banks, is content writer, Tswana Hippie; performer and radio DJ, Ms Soul Ink Siki; and singer and songwriter, Miss Page.

The books that have been chosen for the readings have been described as, “A selection of inspiring stories, texts and letters from some brilliant writers, with the thematics ranging from body positivity to overcoming personal demons, to some brilliant lyrical poetry. In the mix of writers is everyone from Amy Schumer to Douglas Adams.”

While it may take some time to grasp the rather intimidating and unusual visuals in this setting that has rarely been seen in South Africa, it has been found that baring their bodies has had a profound impact on the attention that the audience pays to the content of each book.

On the topic of body shaming, in this critical society in which we live, founder of POPArt Theatre, Hayleigh Evans said, “We have many people come to us after a show with specific feedback on that. The readers are all different shapes and sizes and part of what Naked Girls Reading stands for is to spread some body positivity.”

The first readings of the year took place from 20 to 22 January and were met with sold-out shows. “We had full houses who responded incredibly well to the readings. Given the theme, it was also an incredibly uplifting experience,” said Evans.

Despite what some may think, it is not a place for women only – men are welcome to join in on this lyrical and intellectual event. Enjoy the readings and, don’t worry, once you’re able to get past the initial shock of seeing a naked stranger in public, the rest is a breeze.
