Illuminating exhibition in Melville

JOBURG – City art spaces collaborate and display a new, illuminating exhibition.

The exhibition, Dark Passages, Lighted Rooms has opened at August House Studio in Doornfontein and on display at the Map Gallery in Melville.

August House Studio is an unassuming Art Deco light industrial building – due to its 40s exterior – situated in End Street, Doornfontein, which was opened in 1987.

Upon entering the building and its maze of dark passages, behind many a closed door, you will find some of the most exciting up-and-coming, established artists that Jozi’s vibrant art scene has to offer.

Inside, the artists’ brightly-lit studios are where inspiration was found to compile this exhibition featuring some of these artists.

Andrew Ntshabele, Greatjoy Ndlovu, Solomon Omogboye, Lehlogonolo Mashaba, Mbongeni Fakudze, Robyn Field, Samson Mnisi and Toni-Ann Ballenden are the selected artists and their work is currently on display at the exhibition currently open at the Map Gallery until 14 October. Ndlovu noted, “My paintings take a critical view on different emotional behaviours and expressions; this is influenced by varying socio-economic effects that we encounter in our day-to-day lives.”

The opening of the exhibition saw an impressive turnout, but the momentum is not set to dwindle, with numerous people entering the doors of the gallery during the week and even more during the busy weekends in the social hub that is Melville.

Organisers and curators are looking forward to many more people visiting the gallery to view the group exhibition during the upcoming weeks before the exhibition comes to a close.

This inspired show is definitely one not to be missed by art lovers across Gauteng.
