Arts community celebrates its main contributors

BRAAMFONTEIN – Hundreds honoured the arts community at the BASA Awards last night.

It was a night to pay tribute to those making waves in the arts community.

The 19th annual Business and Arts South Africa (Basa) Awards were held on 19 September at the Shine Studios in Braamfontein and the arts community really showed their support for the growing industry.

Art lovers showed up in their numbers to see who would win in each of the 11 Basa categories; they showed their love for the people who use art to convey important social and political messages.

Actress and host for the evening, Masasa Mbangeni explained the importance of an awards ceremony such as Basa. “Each of the awards embodies the personal sense of empowerment that the artists have gained through the creative process and the transformative art-making process,” she said.

Also in attendance at the prestigious event was the Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa who paid tribute to the recently deceased kwaito star, Mandoza.

She spoke about the role that art plays in the lives of individuals and the greater community. “In the process of self-fulfillment, the arts are also the method of self-realisation of the individual in society – the measure of development,” said Mthethwa.

This year’s theme, Creative Furnace, determined the type of artwork that would be presented by each of the winners. Guided by artist, Belinda Blignaut a group of amateur artists created the ceramic art pieces, which were later presented to the winners.

Nando’s, Concerts SA, the SA Taxi Foundation, Total South Africa, cement company PPC, Distell and Transnet, were just a few of the winners who received awards in various categories.

Design Indaba founder, Ravi Naidoo, First National Bank and the United States Embassy were honoured with special awards for their exceptional contributions to the arts and promotion of the industry.
