Voice of Joburg: Selfie-queens in the city

AUCKLAND PARK – Find out what two city-loving selfie queens love about Joburg.

Studying at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is fountains of fun for two selfie queens.

City Buzz bumped into two young women who were enjoying the famous fountains at UJ Kingsway Campus, and showing their appreciation for the lovely scenery by taking an obscene number of selfies – but who doesn’t love a good selfie?

“Do you go to this university,” City Buzz asked the ladies, Bonolo Shinda and Tebogo Mantsu.

They explained that they did not and that is why they needed to take photos with the fountain while they had the chance. “We’re here because our friends are graduating,” said Shinda.

“We’re all hometown friends so we’re just here for support. It’s an exciting time so we want to be here and do the whoopee dance for them!”

Inquiring what the whoopie dance is, Mantsu responded, “It’s the dance we do when we’re excited. Our group is weird like that.”

“So how will the group be celebrating the graduations?” City Buzz asked the pair.

“Well, we’re going to be sitting in the actual graduation for a while and, afterwards, we’re probably going for dinner with family. I think after that is when the real celebration begins! Maybe we’ll hit up a nice chilled spot in the city to toast their achievements,” said Mantsu.

Enjoying the big city life, the selfie sisters explained that coming to Joburg from Umtata is always nice because they get to experience the things that they aren’t usually able to do in a small town.

“What’s your favourite thing to do in Joburg?” we asked.

“I love the fact that there’s that bungee place in Fourways, we can go to that shipping container mall in Melville, but my absolute favourite is Braamfontein. I like hanging around with the cool crowd,” said Shinda.

“No, I’m a fan of the markets,” Manstu concluded.
