A run for the ladies

JOBURG - The people who took part in the Totalsports Ladies Race hit the ground running on Woman’s Day and made the journey to the finish line in true testament to teamwork.

The race which is held in celebration of Woman’s Day, kicked off promptly at 8am on 9 August, and Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown was filled with people of all ages dressed in pink. Participants were able to take part in either a 5km fun run or a 10km timed race.

The race saw great support from the public, with 2 382 people taking part in the 5km fun race and 2 800 runners taking part in the 10km race.

Lebogang Phalula claimed gold in the 10km race, with Tebogo Masehla finishing second and Chery-lee Schoeman taking third.

“There was a very nice vibe on the day,” said Phalula.

“I was surprised by the support. Everyone seemed to know my name and shouted for me as I ran past. Taking part in a women’s race on National Woman’s Day is very special. This is ubuntu power to the women.”

The race followed a rather historical route around the city with registrations taking place at the Africa Museum. The race started in Mary Fitzgerald Square and went along Enoch Sontonga Street and past the Oriental Plaza.

The Woman’s Day celebrations were closed off with a lively performance by South African hip-hop sensation, Kwesta.
