Braam-based company looks to sponsor scholars

BRAAMFONTEIN - The Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Braamfontein, has sounded the call for pupils to apply for scholarships and wishes to help disadvantaged, academically-exceptional scholars realise their future careers.

The NGO is calling on children who possess great potential from Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, to submit their applications for sponsorships. The deadline is 31 August.

The main aim of the programme is to provide deserving, disadvantaged children with a scholarship to attend some of the top performing junior schools in the country. This well-established organisation has been sponsoring scholarships for 15 years.

“We have a lot of sponsors,” explained Lillian SaĂŻd, student programme officer at SSP.

“First, we have our corporate sponsors, which are both global and local. We have a lot of large corporations from America that donate towards the scholarships that we give the children.

“We also have individual sponsors who can opt to donate half of the funds for a scholarship and another who may opt to donate funds towards the other half, or whatever they can do to help, really.”

SSP visited a number of primary schools and community centres in different townships with the aim of introducing the programme to principals, teachers and the community, as well as to encourage and inform the communities about the opportunities that lie ahead for distinguished scholars.

More than 800 scholars have benefited from this programme since the programme was launched. The main premise of the programme is also to find those who are talented in other fields and provide support to the families of the scholars.

By providing the support to the families, the community may see a return in the expenditure on the scholar.

Forms are available on SSP’s website, as well as in libraries and schools around Gauteng.
