Mother’s tantrums help crown Nomthi as Sishebo Queen

JOBURG - Nomthandazo Mdluli, whose name means a master prayer, relied on the power of prayer to bag R200 000 and R50 000 worth of Shoprite vouchers as the ultimate winner of Your Perfect Sishebo Show.

Nomthandazo Mdluli, whose name means a master prayer, relied on the power of prayer to bag R200 000 and R50 000 worth of Shoprite vouchers and become the ultimate winner of the Your Perfect Sishebo show.

“I prayed all the time at the start and end of the show, asking the Almighty to stand by my side and help me through to win this competition, not just for me and my family, but for the community that I care for as well,” she said.

Although her own favourite dish, uphuthu and amasi (pap and maas), is one of the simplest dishes under the sun, Nomthi, as she is fondly known to her fellow contestants and those close to her, put up a huge fight to prepare what she called ‘sometimes complicated dishes’ which were a far cry from her pap and maas.

“I had to pull out all the stops for this one, especially with my ‘masterchef’ son, Vusi. It was only after winning the competition that I began to appreciate my late mother’s cooking instructions and the tantrums she used to throw at me for a poor dish,” said the 58-year-old Soweto-born Fleurhoff resident.

Nomthi, who is known to be a selfless woman, hopes to use part of her windfall for her feeding scheme, Siyanakekela (we care for others) in Braamfischerville, Soweto, and also grow her catering company, Nomthi Foodies.

“The cooking skills I have learnt in this competition will auger well, not just for Nomthi Foodies, but also for Siyanakekela. Caring for other is my second nature,” she said.

The show was sponsored by Unilever’s Knorr Soup, Knorrox as well as Rajah Spice, and show executive producer Bevin Antonio van der Byl of Axe Communications said the show had bolstered SABC 2 viewership and could see the show’s return in a couple of months.
