‘Drive by barber’ chops top knots

CAPE TOWN - Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues, a musical comedy group from Cape Town, uploaded a controversial video onto YouTube on 18 February.

The group went around Cape Town cutting ‘top knots’ – a hairstyle when hair is knotted at the top of your head –

off guy’s heads. A top knot has been described by website, The Lad Bible as ‘the trademark style of the hipster’. Hipster’s have come to replace the Mod movement prevalent in the UK back in the late 60’s.

In the video, members of the group explain that many things annoy them in this world. But nothing quite so much as what they call the top knot. They drive around the Mother City in search of hipsters with top knots. Once they identify a target, one member of the group climbs out of the car. He stows a head cam and runs behind the unsuspecting victim cutting off the top knot with a pair of scissors. The detached knots are thrown into the Atlantic Ocean.

YouTube came to life with more than 2 000 comments on the video. Here’s what some had to say:

BMannHD commented: Public pranks are funny, public pranks that don’t harm people are funny, this video just [made me angry]. You think you are doing something to help society? Wanna help the world, get a real job. as someone who wears long hair as a man, I would like to say that it would be a very bad day for you if you did this to me and I just so happened to get a hold of you as you ran away, a very bad day indeed.

Alexander Aramaki commented: I have a top knot but I thought this was hilarious. If this was real or if this was to happen to me though, I would out sprint him, tackle him onto the ground and beat his face into a pulp and rip his moustache off with my bare hands

Samuel Cannon: This is assault. You are actively trying to remove a person’s right of expression just because you don’t like their hairstyle. You are going up to random strangers, cutting their hair without their consent, and running off like cowards. You should be ashamed. While nowhere near as bad, you are comparable to Sam Pepper in this situation. This is never okay. I, and many other people, demand a public apology.
