FNB Tree Sculpture Project near completion

JOHANNESBURG – First National Bank (FNB) is nearing completion of its Tree Sculpture Project after a six-ton tree sculpture was erected in Joburg's Bank City Piazza.

With the concept of Joburg’s inner-city rejuvenation in mind, the idea behind the project was to activate the urban spaces surrounding Bank City Piazza by introducing an innovative and creative ‘urban savannah’.

FNB launched the project by inviting artists to submit their interpretations of the brief. The brief was to design a public sculpture or group of sculptures that are a visual representation of the tree in FNB’s logo, symbolic of being proudly South Africa, providing shade and protection, firmly rooted in the African soil.

Sean Slemon was the artist appointed with the task of creating the sculptures to represent the bank around Joburg. He was chosen when his idea exceeded FNB’s expectations.

Slemon created multiple pieces from fabrics including laser cut metal sheets, laminated wood and fibreglass.

The artist did not complete the works alone and worked with JP Engineering and Estee Automation to assist him with the large fabrics.

Slemon has reported that he has received great feedback of the work and is very proud to have been part of the project.
