Welcome to the ‘anti-salon’

JOBURG - Joburg is filled with weird and wonderful places such as the Bioscope, the Factory 'anti-mall' and now you can visit an 'anti-salon'.

These ‘anti-places’ have started to pop up all over Joburg and aim to rebel against the conventional mall or salon.

It is an attempt to offer the public completely new experiences from their everyday activities.

Freedom Hair, situated in Melville’s 7th street in the courtyard beside Hell’s Kitchen whiskey bar, is a hair salon quite unlike any other.

Boyden Barnardo is the bearded and tattooed barber and owner of Freedom Hair.

“I wanted to create a space where people could come down and be human – and be themselves – with no constraints or conventional confinements,” he said.

The salon is styled in a retro, grunge, rock fashion with an espresso bar in front of a wall covered in Time magazines.

The salon serves patrons with coffee from Sihle’s Brew, a Joburg company that roasts a unique African blend.

Asked about the inspiration behind the decor of the salon Barnardo said, “If you had to look at my house you’d see that it’s the same as I’ve done at the salon. I was just sick and tired of conforming to what society is now.”

The salon does not only supply coffee and a haircut, but may soon be adding a tattooing area.

Do you know of any funky places to visit like this one?
