Freedom of (hate) speech?

JOBURG - Dookoom, a Cape Town-based group, has sparked outrage with their latest musical offering called Larney Jou Poes.

Released 12 October, Larney Jou Poes is described by the group as a song which aims to address the ill treatment of farm workers by their employers.

Isaac Mutant, rapper from Dookoom, stated, “We just want people to be talking,” referring to the fact that there are many issues in South Africa which are dusted under the mat and kept out of the public eye.”

Afriforum does not share the same view as Dookoom. Instead they feel it demonises white people and creates a negative impression of the white farmers which in turn leaves them vulnerable to attacks.

Members of the public have expressed their concerns and grief’s with the song, “If Dookoom want to ‘talk about it’ they can go to some psychologists and keep their little boy ‘I’m so angry’ issues to themselves,” said Peter on Youtube, who then proceeded to refer to the group as “Tik kop racist hate speech losers.” Tony Ehrenreich (Cosatu) stated that instead of banning the song, the issues behind the words should be addressed before South Africa has an uprising on its hands.

This issue has been brought to the attention of the Human Rights Commission and there is no doubt the controversy behind the song will test the boundaries and constraints of the laws pertaining to freedom of speech.

This is not the first risqué video made public by the group. The Dookoom EP released a promotional video on Youtube which also displays some questionable content and has the public asking about their intoxication levels. South Africans will be patiently awaiting the actions of the Human Rights Commission.
