Visit Joburg’s gateway from the south

JOBURG - A Johannesburg Heritage Foundation bus tour will trace the main route from the Cape and Kimberley diamond fields to the Witwatersrand.

The Turffontein bus tour will take sightseers through Booysens, Turffontein, Mondeor and surrounds; an area referred to as “Joburg’s gateway from the south”.

“Places visited or seen en route will include the Crown Mines area – shedding a tear for all the mine dumps that have gone; Booysens, with its hotel and police station; and some of the places where famous people [such as artist Maude Sumner and Randlord Sir Abe Bailey] lived,” said foundation spokesperson Eira Bond.

Sightseers will also be shown Daisy de Melker’s house and a number of Turffontein buildings, including the fire station, race course, and the Holy Family College.

“The Anglo-Boer War [will also be] remembered, as we stop at the Mondeor Cemetery and memorials,” said Bond.

The tour will take place on 23 August, and will begin at the Sunnyside Park Hotel, 2 York Road, Parktown, at 2pm.
