Explore mid-century modern Joburg by bus

JOBURG - THE CITY'S various styles of modernist architecture will form the main attraction on a Johannesburg Heritage Foundation bus tour.

The Modernism tour will take in some of the buildings that have graced the city from the middle of the 19th century.

Foundation spokesperson Eira Bond said the bus will depart from the Sunnyside Park Hotel and make its way to the first stop on the tour, the University of the Witwatersrand.

“Here we will explore the 1936 exhibition grounds, in addition to the Central Block and the Hillman building,” she said.

“Following this, we will jump back on the bus and take a trip into central Johannesburg to look at not only some modernist office blocks, but also residential versions of modernism, too.”

The tour will then head off to Hillbrow and Yeoville, with architect Harold Le Roith’s celebrated building, Radoma Court, as one of the highlights.

The tour will take place on 16 August, and will leave from the Sunnyside Park Hotel, 2 York Road, Parktown, at 2pm.
