School pupils run amok in Joburg CBD

JOBURG - Motorists were cautioned about "thousands" of school pupils on an "uncontrolled" protest march in the Joburg CBD on the afternoon of 30 July.

Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the pupils had marched to Albertina Sisulu Road and were diverting traffic.

“They are protesting outside the Department of Education, but I can’t confirm what they’re protesting about,” he said.

Minnaar added that the pupils allegedly planned to travel to Ekurhuleni after the protest.

Tweets about the march have started appearing on social media platform Twitter.

@EdmundElias tweeted, “Jhb CBD no go zone as thousands of kids invade running battles now” (sic), while @JordiGriff said, “Angry students busy running rampage in the JHB CBD”.

@M_Khumza tweeted, “What I have just witnessed in JHB CBD is shocking and disgusting at the same time. A mob of students vandalising street vendors machandise” (sic).

According to @MikeDPSlater, some of the children are carrying weapons.

“School kids armed with machetes looting and running a mock in #johannesburg #CBD. street stalls overturned but no visible injuries,” he tweeted.
