Local tour operators land international award

The now-familiar double-decker red tour buses that take sightseers through the city received an accolade at the company's international conference.

City Sightseeing Joburg & Soweto won the award for Best New City Sightseeing Operator of the Year at the 2014 City Sightseeing Worldwide Conference held in Malaga, Spain.

The three other finalists in this category were Cordoba, Kazan and Miami.

The Cape Town branch received the Best Customer Service Award.

The Johannesburg and Cape Town branches also won top performer awards from TripAdvisor, one of the world’s largest travel websites.

“The winner of the best new operator award [was] judged according to the quality of service, the overall presentation of the staff and vehicles, the marketing efforts made to launch and promote the tour, the volume of passengers achieved, and the overall representation of the… brand and product,” said City Sightseeing International deuputy managing director, Mandy Gaughan.

“It was with great pleasure that we awarded these accolades to the operations in South Africa, which are held up as flagship locations for other tours to aspire to.”

The operator’s fascinating Joburg bus route includes stops at Gandhi Square, the Carlton Centre’s Roof of Africa, the James Hall Transport Museum, the Apartheid Museum, Gold Reef City, the Mining District, the SAB World of Beer, Newtown Precinct, Origins Centre, Braamfontein, and Constitution Hill.

Sightseers also have the option of a Soweto tour extension that will take them to the most culturally rich and historically significant sites in the area.
