Jozi tour offers locals a taste of inner city

The Taste of Jozi tour offered locals a taste of the Johannesburg inner city and the rich history of the city.

Tourism with a difference.

This was how the Taste of Jozi tour was described by the tour organiser, Jo Buitendach. The tour hosted by company Past Experiences took place on 17 April and took locals on a tour through the Johannesburg CBD, all with the aim of showing them the rich history of the city.

Buitendach, a Past Experiences tour specialist, explained the reason behind doing such a unique tour of the inner-city.

“The aim behind doing this kind of tour is to change people’s perception about the Johannesburg inner-city and show them what the city has to offer,” she said.

She added that Past Experiences had been doing these kinds of tours for almost five years and the aim behind them is to showcase the history and culture of the area.

Past Experiences also has a variety of tours including graffiti tours, art tours, history tours and township tours in popular townships such as Soweto. They are focused on hosting walking tours through the inner-city and have also conducted tours in Fordsburg and the Tshwane CBD.

“We also involve the local community when doing these tours by either getting them to assist with conducting the tour or letting them cater for the tourists,” she explained.

The tour took locals through important historical sites such as the Rand Club, Gandhi Square and Oppenheimer Park. It also highlighted various attempts by the city, and various businesses, to re-generate the city and market it as a tourist destination site.

“In addition to inner city tours, we also offer tailor-made tours for businesses meaning that there is something for everyone,” Buitendach explained.

Past Experiences is also heavily involved in community projects and works with various homes in communities.

Buitendach said she hoped that Past Experiences would continue with tours of this nature and even do more of them as time goes by.

“We also have budget tours on the weekends for locals but on weekdays we focus more on tourists and corporates,” she added.
